Art and Design

Intent:

At Whittingham C of E  Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.

 

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. We will:

  •       Ensure we are covering skills and concepts from the National Curriculum
  •       We aim to develop their artistic skills through using a variety of media. 
  •       We have chosen these artists due to their local and global importance. 
We will ensure children have the opportunity to use and develop these skills throughout the lessons.
 
Implementation
We will structure lessons so that prior learning and revision of key skills are continuously built upon.
We will ensure key skills and techniques are introduced and used with lessons.

Impact:

 We want children to develop a love of art and learn about a variety of artists.

We will measure the impact of learning through assessing their development of key skills.
Art in KS1 
 
This half term we have been learning about The Great Fire of London. To support our learning of this historical event and to develop our artistic skills we have produced silhouette images of the buildings in London in 1666. To create the backgrounds we used a variety of carefully chosen oil pastel colours. Combined, these colours create an effective look of fire and heat. 
We were really impressed with how hard the children thought about the silhouettes of the Tudor houses. We have houses which are breaking apart, have 3D doors and even some with thatched roofs!
Well done Class One, your creativity has shone once again! 
Across the school we take lots of opportunities to be involved in local events and competitions. Here are some of the Year 1 and 2's independent drawings of 'Northumberbear'  as part of our work celebration Northumberland Day at the end of the month.
Bailiffgate art competition 
 
KS2 have entered the Bailiffgate school art competition for the Beside the Seaside Summer Exhibition! The children could choose whether they wanted to create a fantastical Rockpool, a spectacular shell or a favourite sea creature, real or imagined. 
Some of the incredible entries are attached below. The children all tried their best and I am sure that we will have some winners!
In KS1, we have been enjoying learning more about different artists and how we can improve our knowledge of different skills. We have recently been thinking about our drawing skills and the different types of lines we could use and have now moved on to learning about paint and mixed media. KS1 had great fun exploring colour mixing, using a variety of different mediums such as playdough and paint to help us. 
In KS1 we have been creating some Clarice Cliff style plates using our knowledge of the primary and secondary colours.
