History

Intent: 

The history curriculum at Whittingham C of E Primary School makes full use of resources within the immediate and wider local area enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the history of their locality.
Topics are informed by the national curriculum and are sensitive to children’s interests, as well as the context of the local area. The history curriculum at Whittingham C of E Primary School is carefully planned and structured to ensure that current learning is linked to previous learning and that it is In line with the national curriculum 2014, the curriculum at Whittingham C of E Primary aims to ensure that all pupils: Gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world which helps to stimulate pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past; Are encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement; Begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

 We have chosen particular topics as they are local and relevant to the children which enables children to acquire an understanding of time, events and people in their parents and grandparents memory.
We have chosen events which are beyond living memory which are significant nationally and globally, so the children can build on their knowledge of the wider world. 

Implementation: 

 Structuring lessons so prior learning is always built upon and revision of facts and historical understanding are built upon.
Ensure that revision and introduction of key vocabulary is built into each lesson and ensure that children have the opportunity to use these within lessons.

Impact:

 We want to develop a love of history and researching historical facts.

As the children develop their  technical vocabulary this will be displayed throughout the school/classroom.
We will measure the impact of lessons through key questioning, child led assessment and summative assessment. 
Class One’s Trip to the Grace Darling Museum 
Class One's visit to Woodhorn following our WWII topic. 
In Early Years we shared som evacuee suitcases, we enjoyed sharing these and talking about what we found and why. We learned about why evacuees were sent to live in the country, away from the cities like Newcastle. This was a little introduction to the topic of world war linked to when we look more closely at Remembrance Day after half term. We understood why the children had packed teddies, a favourite toy and photographs of their families. 
In class 2 this year we have learned about the impact and importance of coal mining in the region. As part of this learning we went to Woodhorn Museum which used to be a colliery, we stepped back in time to find out what it was like to work down the local mines. Some of use worked with sources of material from the archives to learn more about the Hartley Pit disaster while others found out about the machinery needed to run the mine.
November 2025
Class 2 have taken part in eight online learning workshops where we have learned about the Roman’s and Hadrian’s Wall. We were able to learn from experts from Newcastle University, The Great North Museum, The Tullie Museum, staff from various Roman Forts and from English Heritage. We even met a Roman soldier who told us how the soldiers entertained themselves with board games, theatre and Gladiatorial games, we also took a flight in an aeroplane from the Roman Wall in the West of the country all the way to Wallsend (Segadunum) in the East of Northern Britain. This was a fabulous experience and a great way to learn.
